In July 2012 LIBER's E-Science working group released 'Ten recommendations for libraries to get started with research data management'. Since then, several libraries across Europe have started to build up or have expanded their capacities for research data management, typically combining e-infrasrtucture and support services.

To further encourage libraries in continuing this process, LIBER's Steering Committee on Scholarly Communication and Research Infrastructures has collected case studies, hosted by or with strong involvement of libraries in research data management.

These studies describe policies and strategies that pave the way for the creation, institutional integration and the running of support services and underlying infrastructures. In addition, challenges and lessons learned are described and ways- forward outlined.

This study commissioned by the Jisc co-design programme under the student innovation strand, looked at what we know about students' expectations and experiences of ICT at university.

Developments in mobile technology, web and social media trends and the widespread use of technology in schools are all changing the expectations of arriving students. At the same time the graduate employment market is generating new demands on the curriculum and changing the skills required of recent graduates. Universities often feel caught between the need to provide robust systems for all and the need to accommodate the diversity of devices, services and subject-specific innovations.

Institutional repositories, green road and backbone of the open access movement, contain a growing number of items that are metadata without full text, metadata with full text only for authorized users and items that are under embargo or that are restricted to on-campus access. This paper provides a short overview of relevant literature and presents empirical results from a survey of 25 institutional repositories that contain more than 2 million items. The intention is to evaluate their degree of openess with specific attention to different categories of documents (journal articles, books and book chapters, conference communications, electronic theses and dissertations, reports, working papers) and thus to contribute to a better understanding or their features and dynamics. We address the underlying question of whether this lack of openess is temporary due to the transition from traditional scientific communication to open access infrastructures and services, or here to stay, as a basic feature of the new and complex cohabitation of institutional repositories and commercial publishing.

Learned societies are “a critical part of the research environment”, and many rely largely on subscription income from their journals publishing programme to support the other services they offer to their members in the promotion of their academic discipline. As a result, they are facing enormous challenges as the journals publishing landscape becomes more complex and established revenues are threatened.

Following the publication of the UK Finch Group’s report on expanding access to research publications, there is genuine concern that learned societies could potentially stand to lose out significantly if Open Access is widely adopted. They are understandably worried about the future sustainability of their organizations and the knock-on effect on the subject research communities they support and serve.

This study concerns administrative support provided to encourage the research and publishing activities of academic librarians working in Association of Research Libraries member libraries. Deans and directors of these libraries were asked to respond to an online survey concerning the support measures that their libraries provide, as well as their thoughts on support measures that academic libraries should provide. When compared to earlier studies, the survey results indicate that most support measures have grown over time. Results also suggest increases in the requirements for publication in academic libraries, as well as in the number of libraries at which librarians have faculty status.

“What Does the HathiTrust Decision Mean for Libraries?” As Band notes, “The decision has implications for libraries that go far beyond the specific facts of the case. This paper offers some preliminary thoughts on what these implications may be.” The paper reviews several issues including mass digitization and storage, access to works, suggestions concerning other forms of access, and associational standing. Band concludes:

"The HathiTrust decision provides libraries with much greater certainty concerning their mass digitization projects. The decision indicated that the act of digitization and the storage of digital files is a fair use if the libraries provide full-text search functionality and full-text access to disabled individuals. with respect to full-text access to the non-disabled the court ruled that a use could be transformative if the function or purpose of the use is different from that of the original work."

The International Association of University Libraries offers grants of up to €2,000 to staff from member libraries to travel to other member libraries for periods of at least two weeks to investigate current issues of importance to IATUL libraries. Applications may be made by any staff member at an IATUL member library with the support of the university librarian.  Only one application for a grant can be made from one member library in each calendar year.

The International Association of University Libraries is calling for interested and qualified candidates to serve on its Board of Directors.

IATUL is looking for candidates to represent

·        Australia and New Zealand

·        Europe

on its Board of Directors, the executive body of IATUL responsible for the further development of the association.

According to the IATUL Constitution, ordinary and associated members may propose representatives for election. Nominations shall name the candidate and shall show evidence of the candidate's consent. Nominators must be official representatives of a member institution. The decision as to who shall be invited to join the Board will be made by the Board and presented to the General Assembly for approval at the annual conference.
