Embedding Libraries – Service and Development in Context

The 38th annual conference of the International Association of University Libraries (IATUL) was held in Bolzano (Italy) from 18 to 22 June 2017. This year’s conference hosted by the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano University Library was entitled “Embedding Libraries – Service and Development in Context”.

The participants were greeted by the Governor of South Tyrol, Arno Kompatscher, who emphasized the fact that the conference title is indicative of present and future trends of academic libraries. IATUL President, Reiner Kallenborn, addressed his welcome message to the participants. The speech highlighted IATUL’s aim of addressing all the topics and challenges pertaining to library management and services. Libraries are integral parts of university systems and their mission to develop education, research and all other  endeavours is primarily embedded in the university’s strategic processes. Get involved

To complement the traditional IATUL annual conferences and to overcome the unavoidable time limitation of a yearly meeting, special interest groups are meant to provide a continuous opportunity to create new approaches to challenges in librarianship by joint international efforts.

Each task force focuses on a particular subject area and defines its own terms of reference, together with long and short-term goals. Task forces are chaired by senior librarians who will be appointed by the IATUL Board.

Special interest groups will be encouraged to present the results of their work at Annual IATUL Conferences. The standard means of communication for Special Interest Groups will be e-mail and video conferencing.

Strategic Library Management in Emerging Countries
IATUL Directors' Summit, Phnom Penh, March 2017

The current motto “One World Library” expresses IATUL’s endeavour to embrace all cultural differences and starting positions for approaches to challenges, even if these sometimes appear insurmountable.

IATUL’s ambition is to focus on the specific and down to earth, and, therefore, to provide assistance and additional inspiration where it is needed most.

The intention of the IATUL Directors’ Summit on “Strategic Library Management in Emerging Countries” was the analysis of the level of services and infrastructure at university libraries in Cambodia. The event was organised in cooperation with Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia (PUC) and Cambodia Librarians and Documentalists Association and was a great success.
IATUL Directors’ Summits use the World Café method of round table discussions to exchange ideas and experience in greater depth than is possible with the traditional presentation format of conferences.

During the two workshop days, March 25 – 26 March 2017, the discussions centred on six topics, which were introduced in 10-minute keynote presentations by experts from Belgium, Canada, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand:
