Information Literacy in the World of Work – A Pilot Study in the Hospitality Industry in South Africa

The hospitality industry contributes to 9.3% of the total South African job market. Private and public tertiary institutions offer a range of certificate, diploma and degree programmes for this market. These courses include a work-readiness component to prepare students for the world of work. This paper reports on the results of a pilot study conducted with 40 managers at a prominent hotel group in South Africa. The aim of the study was to get a better understanding of the work information literacies required. Based on the insights gained, areas of improvement are offered to adapt and add information literacies for the work place into the existing work readiness programmes.
