Special Interest Group for Artificial Intelligence & Disruptive Technologies

Established in 2026, The IATUL Special Interest Group for Artificial Intelligence & Disruptive Technologies (SIG-AIDT) brings together library professionals from research-intensive and technically focused universities to explore how artificial intelligence and other disruptive technologies are changing research, scholarly communication, library operations, and the people who make this work possible.

SIG-AIDT is intended to be acommunity of practice and a laboratory for international collaboration. Rather than focusing primarily on AI policy or advocacy, the group takes an applied and future-focused approach: What are research libraries doing with these technologies? What is working? What are we learning? What new capabilities will our organizations and staff need? And where can IATUL libraries accomplish more by experimenting and learning together?

Our scope begins with artificial intelligence but deliberately looks beyond it. Generative AI is the disruptive technology transforming our institutions today; other technologies will follow. SIG-AIDT provides a continuing forum through which IATUL members can identify emerging technologies, evaluate their implications for research libraries, and help one another prepare for technological change.

SIG-AIDT will meet virtually, with meeting times varied to accommodate participation across IATUL's international membership. Working groups may be established around particular projects or areas of interest.
